My Speech

For the last couple of weeks our school has been writing and practicing our speeches we all got to choose our topics, mine's ‘Why kids shouldn’t have homework.’ since I’m a year seven my speech had to be about 2.50 - 3.00 minutes I think it is about that. Hope you like it, Please comment.

Kids shouldn’t have homework
Have you ever gone home to find that you have a mountain of homework that has slowly piled up till you have way too much to do and it’s all due in tomorrow?! Well, I’m here to persuade all those who like homework that it shouldn’t even have been created.
Do you know that 76% of people think that kids shouldn’t have homework? I mainly think it’s because some people barely have enough time for family and hobbies because they are doing homework and studying.

Last year I didn’t want to come to school because I had either not done my homework or didn’t want more so faked being sick and missed out on heaps of school.
Have you have ever been over to your friends house and been given boatloads of homework and awkwardly had to do it or not do it and get in sooo much trouble when you get back to school?

It's so annoying right? Teachers just don’t get it, and it's even worse when your friend gets in trouble too because you feel like it's all your fault, I hate it when that happens.

Next do you know that kids already spend around six hours at school so don’t need another one or two hours of academic learning do
we?

We are already tired enough and need to rest, relaxation and to spend time with family, play with pets and do special hobbies this is important.

If you don’t have fun then you don’t like to do things as much and if you have homework then you won’t enjoy school as much.
Take me for example: I love school and I don’t have much home work at all, this means I have more time to learn more through experience.

Alfie Kohn, author of ‘The Homework myth: why kids get too much of a bad thing’ looked at the usual reasons why schools give homework: promotes higher achievement, reinforces learning and teaches study skills and responsibility. However, none of these assumptions have actually been proven in research, logic and experience.

Have you ever considered the cost of a homework book? At our school usually if you need a homework book you get them for free and imagine the price of that! Say $3 per book, per person, per year say 150 students for 5 years that’s $2250 for only 150 students. If the school has more students for longer - imagine the price of that?

So if you are  a homework lover or a teacher that gives out heaps of homework then I hope I have changed your  mind and that you will help me make a law against homework. Kids shouldn’t have homework!
